Save to Notion is a powerful browser extension that lets you save anything on the web to Notion, including YouTube videos.

What is Save to Notion?

Save to Notion is a browser extension that lets you save emails and other web content directly to your Notion workspace.

Key Features:

  • Fill Database Properties: Add tags, relations, checkboxes, and more directly from the extension.
  • Capture Screenshots: Take and upload screenshots and images to Notion.
  • Highlight Text: Highlight web text and send it to Notion.
  • Auto-Mapping: Automatically map data like publication date and author name to Notion properties.
  • Custom Forms: Create forms for different use cases, both work and personal.

Step 1. Install Save to Notion

⭐
This post is for Chrome users. However, the extension is also available on both Safari and Firefox, and you can follow still this tutorial.
  1. Go to the Chrome Web Store.
  1. Click "Add to Chrome."
  1. Pin the extension
      • Click on The “Extension” icon in the top-right corner of your browser.
      • Click on the Pin icon
      • The extension icon will now appear on the top-right corner of your browser.

For Other Browsers

  • Safari: Install from the App Store.
  • Firefox: Install from Mozilla Add-ons.

Step 2. Setting Up Save to Notion

  1. Go to youtube.com or any other page.
  1. Click on the extension icon in the top right corner of your browser.
  1. Click on “Add a Form”
💡
If you're not logged into Notion in the same browser, the extension will prompt you to log in.
  1. Click on “Select a Page or Database” and choose the Database or Page where you want to save your emails. For example, I use my database “Second Brain” to store all the information I want to keep for reference.
💡
If you don't find the database or page you want in the list, enter some text in the search bar to find it.
  1. It will return you to the previous screen where you can manage fields. Click "Add new Field" to add, or click on an existing field to remove/replace it.
    1. Add new Field
You can add New Field by clicking on the Add New Field button
  1. I removed the "Template" and “Content Image” fields and added a custom "Heart" field to rate how much I liked a video, from 1 ❤️ (very good) to 3 ❤️ (incredible). This is optional and entirely up to you.
  1. Finally, click on “Save & Go Back” at the bottom of the popup

Ok now we configured our form, let’s save Youtube Videos to Notion. 😃

Step 3: Saving Youtube Videos to Notion

  1. Go to youtube.com, and open a video you would like to save. for example this great music live by Ben Bohmer.
  1. Open the extension by clicking on its icon on top right corner.
💡
Alternatively, you can open the extension by using the shortcut ⌥+⇧+E on Mac or ctrl+⇧+E on Windows. You can also right clicking anywhere on the page, click on Save to Notion > “Save Page to Notion”
  1. This will open the extension and the form you just created. You’ll see a preview of the Video in the “Content” field.
  1. (Optional) You can also fill in other properties. I updated my “Heart” field to 3 hearts ❤️ as I love this video!
  1. You can then click on Save Page. This will save the page to Notion and take a few seconds.
  1. The page is now saved in your Notion. Click on "Open Page in Notion" to see it.
  1. Finally, in your Notion workspace, you will see a new page has been created with the YouTube video embedded in the content. Well done! 🤩
  • Note that you can click on the video to play it directly in Notion!

Note: If you have a database with a Gallery view, the newly created page will display with a preview image, allowing you to create a visually appealing gallery. Wow 🥰

Common questions

Here are some common questions:

Can I add the video thumbnail as a cover image?

Yes! By default, when you save a YouTube video content, the thumbnail will be added below the embedded video. If you want to set the thumbnail as the cover instead, you just need to add the “cover” property in the form settings.

  1. Open the form settings by clicking the settings icon at the top right of the form.
  1. Click on "Add New Field" and select the "Cover" property.
  1. This will add the new field "Cover" with the default value "Main Image." Go ahead and click on "Save & Go Back."
  1. You will see a new field, “Cover,” added at the bottom of the form.
  1. If you save the page, you can see the cover image will be set to the thumbnail! Wow. 🤩
Can I add the Youtube website icon as the icon?

Yes! If you want to set the YouTube website icon as the icon of the newly created page, you just need to add the "icon" property in the form settings.

  1. Open the form settings by clicking the settings icon at the top right of the form.
  1. Click on "Add New Field" and select the "Icon" property.
  1. This will add the new field "Icon" with the default value "Website Icon." Finally, click on this field and hide it.
  1. Now click on “Save & Go Back”.
  1. Going back to the form, nothing will change. However, if you click the "2 more fields" button at the bottom, you will see the "Icon" hidden field we just added!
  1. If you save the page, you'll see the website icon set as the page icon! Great. 🤩
Can I save videos on an existing page instead of creating a new database page?
